The South Dakota Animal Industry Board
has been given the charge of establishing and maintaining disease-free
livestock in our state. The Animal Industry Board works closely with
industry to oversee the health and safety of all our livestock.
The Animal Industry Board also cooperates with the Federal lever to
implement health requirements for livestock imported into South Dakota.
Producers are responsible for determining the Import Health Requirements
prior to bringing any livestock into South Dakota.
The Animal Industry Board and our state’s producers have managed their
herds carefully in order to gain “brucellosis-free” status. For that
reason, the following Statute regarding brucellosis, or “Bang’s
Disease,” in dairy cattle was executed:
40-7-20.1. Rules promulgated by Animal Industry Board
The Animal Industry Board shall promulgate rules pursuant to chapter
1-26 concerning:
(1) The issuance of permits for the disposition for immediate slaughter
or for feeding
purposes of animals affected with brucellosis;
(2) The methodology for inspections, examinations, and testing for
brucellosis;
(3) The methodology and criteria for certifying or recertifying an area
brucellosis free;
(4) Vaccination requirements and procedures for the intrastate sale,
loan, lease, and
transportation of breeding animals;
(5) Livestock importation permits and testing and inspection
requirements;
(6) Quarantine authority and procedures; and
(7) The vaccination requirements and procedures for the importation of
breeding animals.
40-7-20.3. Waiver of calfhood vaccination requirement for
import--Requirements-- Restrictions
Female dairy cattle, beef cattle, and bison may be brought into this
state without having been officially calfhood vaccinated for
brucellosis, as required by § 40-7-20, if:
(1) The person desiring to import the nonvaccinates appears in person
before the Animal Industry Board and receives the board's approval;
(2) The nonvaccinates have passed a negative brucellosis test thirty to
sixty days before shipment and again within ten days of shipment to this
state;
(3) Upon arrival the nonvaccinates are quarantined and pass a negative
brucellosis test ninety to one hundred twenty days after arrival; and
(4) Each nonvaccinate has a permanent identification.
Such nonvaccinated cattle or bison may be used only for breeding
purposes and may be sold only for immediate slaughter. However, the
Animal Industry Board may approve the resale of nonvaccinated cattle or
bison imported into this state pursuant to this section if the buyer
appears in person before the board and receives the board's approval.
Such nonvaccinated cattle or bison may then be sold with the board's
approval only for breeding purposes.
To help ensure that your livestock is not exposed to disease, as well as
maintain the health of established herd within the state, please contact
the Animal Industry Board, in advance, to determine the exact Import
Health Requirements and criteria tat must be met before bringing
livestock in to the state.
